Zion United Methodist Church at Marion, AL

Black Heritage, Churches and Cemeteries | Marion in Perry County

Located adjacent to the town square, Zion United Methodist Church was a focal point for the civil rights movement of the 1960s.  The night march that ended with the shooting of Marion native, Jimmie Lee Jackson, started at this church. The death of Jimmie Lee Jackson was one of the primary catalysts for the 1965 Selma to Montgomery civil rights marches.

This church is located at the corner of Pickens & Martin Luther King Drive in Marion (GPS coordinates 32.632639,-87.317833).
