The community of Dixons Mills is named for Joel B. Dixon, Sr. (1777–1861), a native of North Carolina who was among the early pioneers of Marengo County. In the late 1820s, Dixon and his sons built a dam on Mill Creek to power a water-driven gristmill. This mill became a vital hub for local farmers who traveled there to have their corn ground into meal. As the business grew, the family expanded their operations to include a steam engine-driven sawmill and two steam-powered cotton gins. A community rapidly developed around Dixon’s mills. A post office was established in 1845. By the mid-1800s, Dixons Mills was a settled community of farmers and mill workers.

The Dixons Mills Methodist Church was constructed around 1912, and it was the first church built in the community. Prior to 1912, Sunday School was a community wide activity for all denominations held in the old schoolhouse – Dixon’s Mills Academy. The Dixons Mills Methodist Church is a simple, wood-frame building that reflects the modest, functional design common to rural Alabama churches of the early 20th century. This church is essentially unchanged from when it was constructed and remains without additions, air conditioning and plumbing.

This little church is located beside Hwy 43 in the community of Dixons Mills (32.057900,-87.786683 Google Maps).
