Sunflower is a small unincorporated community located in east Washington County. The Sunflower Post Office began operation in 1892 and served the community until it was closed in 2013. The small building that is shown was built sometime prior to 1936 and served as the post office until its closure.
The Sunflower Post Office was operated by the Williams family from 1892 – 1968. Following are the members of the Williams family who served as postmasters:
Sallie Williams Ketchum, 1892-1895
Mary Eliza Skinner Williams, 1895-1902
Lewis H. Williams Jr., 1915 (husband of Carrie Lee Bowling Williams)
Lewis H. Williams Sr., 1915-1935 (father of Lewis Williams Jr.)
Carrie Lee bowling Williams, 1936 until her death in1968
Lewis “Harris” Williams III, 1968
Members of the Catrett family served as postmasters of the post office from 1968 until it closed.
This building is no longer accessible to the public. Shortly after the closure of the post office in 2013, it was relocated to private property and remodeled into a small guest house with framed post office memorabilia on the walls.
