This building was constructed around 1920 as a roadside gas station. It is an example of the “House with Canopy” style of service station architecture, characterized by a single centered column supporting the canopy. Since its original use as a gas station, the building has served several other purposes, including as a laundromat.
The building is a contributing property to the Thomasville Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 12, 1999. This small structure is especially significant because few early rural gas stations of this type survive today. Most have been demolished, substantially altered, or replaced by larger modern convenience stores.
The building is also significant because it represents the arrival of the automobile age in rural southwest Alabama. Constructed in 1920, it served motorists during an important transitional period when communities were shifting from horse-and-wagon transportation to automobiles and trucks.
This building is located on the east side of Thomasville on Old Hwy 5 at the intersection of Old Hwy 5 and Claiborn Avenue (Google Maps – 31.909941, -87.731517).
