Newbern Fire Station at Newbern, AL (built by Rural Studio Students)

Auburn Rural Studio | Newbern in Hale County

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Newbern Fire Station was designed and constructed by four fifth year architecture students at Auburn University’s Rural Studio. This 4,000 sq. ft. building was completed in 2005. The structure was designed to require little or no maintenance. It is clad in pine and translucent polycarbonate, with south-facing horizontal cedar slats to provide shade in summer and admit low winter light. The interior contains exposed steel and timber wall trusses stretched taut by heavy-gauge steel cables and metal anchors. The building has a mezzanine level that’s accessed with alternating tread stairs.

The Newbern Fire Station is located at downtown Newbern on the east side of Highway 61 (GPS coordinates 32.599406,-87.532877).
